Fairy tales of the American Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman 2006 continue in 2012

In a speech in 2006, Samuel Bodman, US Secretary under President Bush statet: “ It is not an understatement to say, as the President did recently, that high oil prices can literally wreck economies. They can restrict development in a way that stifles business growth and, more notably, inhibits improvements in the health and well-being of so many around the world. [1]

If we look two or three or four decades into the future, we know that hydrocarbons alone will not meet the needs of a growing world economy.

Sunny days in Germany provide solar energy comparable to 20 nuclear power plants

After weeks of rain or cloudy weather some days of full sunshine made the photovoltaic devices to work at full power at Germany. At high noon the production of solar energy equaled the power of more than 20 nuclear power plants. At noon the energy demand is at its highest. [1]

Even much better results may be achieved in desert areas of Arabian countries. Solar energy is there available at its best when air conditioning demands the most.

Saudi Arabia position to renewable energy

Commerce and Industry Minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah yesterday promised full government support to industries tapping into alternate sources of energy.stating that the  "Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has put a special focus on alternative energy, and the creation of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) is proof of the government's total commitment." One nuclear core melt per decade

An accident risk assessment of nuclear power plants by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1990 estimated the probability of a core melt at 1 in 10 000 per year for a single reactor unit, and the probability of containment failure 1 in 100. [1]

Awakening green ideas of Kuwait beat U.S. thinktank

Prof Yakoub Al-Obaid, an environmental and nuclear specialist, believes the plan to make Kuwait the world oil capital is feasible, however, the country should include clean sources of  energy in its portfolio. Kuwait’s oil consumption rose 66 percent from 2000 and the consumption made up 16 percent of the country’s production. [1]

Controversial effect of biofuels on the environmental balance

Weiss et al. 2012 summarises the available data of  actual studies related to the environmental impacts of biofuels. One metric ton (t) of biofuel was found to save 55 ± 34 gigajoules of primary energy and 3 ± 1 t carbon dioxide equivalents of greenhouse gases, compared to conventional fuels. [1]

Eon and RWE back out of nuclear projects

Eon and RWE, two German energy giants, back out of the Joint Venture Horizon which planned the construction of up to 7 nuclear power plants in Great Britain. The companies cites high construction costs which face an electricity price of 60 Euro/MegaWatt hour. The planned investment of 18 billion Euro for 6 Gigawatt of nuclear energy could only be feasibly with a market price of 100 Euro/MWh. [1]

Allianz Insurance invests in wind turbines instead of state bonds

Insurance companies invest their money increasingly in alternative energies, to generate yields which are not attainable with state bonds. Allianz, the European biggest insurance company,  has recently  acquired one wind farm in Germany (Lueneburger Heide) and two wind farms in central France (Département Cher). [1]

An executive of the German electric utility company RWE says climate science is wrong

Prof. Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt, RWE manager and author of the book "Die kalte Sonne” (The Cold Sun), together with coauthor Dr. Sebastian Lüning, a geologist of the university of Bremen/Germany, say that climate gases will not cause global temperature to rise. In fact, the sun will weaken. Both authors predict global cooling despite rising rising carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. [1]

Nuclear power for oil tankers and cargo ships to save fuel costs disregarding safety issues

The disaster of the Russian submarine Kursk in 2000, the container ship Rena in front of New Zealand  in 2011, the Costa Concordia grounded at January 13, 2012 and  the accident of Fukushima power station in Japan demonstrate the absurdity to equip cargo ships and tankers with  nuclear power. [1]
